I would have expect that the feeder would rather grind the filament than push the bowden tube out of the feeder. Actually the locking is done by the little teeth in the white plastic thingy, not the horseshoe shaped thingy. Did you check it? Did you change it for a new one when you changed the Bowden for a new? Did you get a original Ultimaker part?

I have seen 3th party tubes with a too small diameter.. Thus: first lift the rentention ring with your finger nails. In my printer this is a white ring on top of the head, where the tube goes in. Then insert the bowden tube all the way down, while you keep the white ring lifted.

And then insert the horseshoe clip? If the tube is not inserted deep enough, it may not grip well upon pulling. That could produce the phenomena you see. But that does not mean there can’t be other causes, such as a worn-out tube, or incorrect outer diameter. For easier removal and replacement of the tube and horseshoe clips, I have designed my own clips a couple of years ago.

Anyway, feel free to borrow the concept and design your own, if these wouldn’t fit well on an UM3. My assumption is, that if the printhead moves, the bowden transmits the head movement to the collet as it is quite stiff.

Over time the bowden-collet connection wears out and the bowden wiggles out of the collets. Should the collet rotate in the feeder-case, should the bowden rotate in the collet or should the bowden akt as a torsion-element? How does the end of your bowden tube look like? It could help to cut the end so there’s a fresh end that the fitting can hold on to We already cut it several times and then replaced it together with the collet.

Just like the printhead, the build-plate has two default temperatures. The representation of the temperature is similar to the printhead temperature.

The value this setting represents will depend on when you check it. On the first layer the fans are turned off, but layer by layer they increase in speed. Cura influences when they will turn on and at what intensity. Obviously, when you are more familiar with the ropes you can tweak these settings youself.

On the Ultimaker 3 extended version I find it difficult to load the filament into the feeder. Unless I lift up on the pressure control mechanism and push the filament up into feeder, the filament will simply not load. I spend the better part of 10 – 15 minutes getting the material loaded every time. Often the filament will get hung up on the lower edge of the mechanism that holds the bowden tube in place.

Sometimes I have to turn the armature of the stepper motor to get the filament into the bowden tube. I am reluctant in lowering the tension as the filament looks like its knurled similar to photos in the manual..

This is my first 3d printer, and other than the feeder issue, the printer is nearly flawless. I have been able to print extremely complex parts with perfection I had to get used to this system too. But once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty easy. The only thing I haven’t gotten used to is the fact that the spools are on the back of the printer, so I now have my printer with the side facing forward on the desk.

Sometimes it can be pretty curled, especially the last part of a spool. To make things easier, definitely make the leading edge as straight as possible. Also, try to make sure there are no overhangs or other issues with the end.

You can cut on a bias Not square to the length of filament or, tinkergnome told me a cool thing you can do, which is heat the end a bit and pull until you get a nice center taper and just snip the very end off and it will feed into the mechanism much easier.

That was not me who told this to you, but it sounds like a good idea. A straight first piece of filament and a chamfered tip is usually sufficient for me, no need to lift the lever. I wonder who it was I do not use the method you just described with the stepper motors running either though I agree, getting access to the back of the machine can be cumbersome I ended up using a cart on rollers and it has helped immensely. It looks like I needed to do a better job of straightening the first few inches of the filament before inserting it into the feeder Thank you for sharing.
